The Belgians used the 81mm Brandt mle 27/31 as its medium mortar support weapon. It was an effective weapon that was used by many nations. The Belgians also had a number of 7.58cm minenwerfer of World War I vintage.

The most common machine gun operated by the Belgian Army was the MG08/15 Maxim machine gun. The German-made weapon had a proven track record in World War I. The Belgians modified the Maxim to fire 7.65 rounds.

The middle ranks of officers were almost invariably drawn from the upper-middle classes: educated in the public schools, instilled with the values of empires, and imbued with a sense of confidence, duty and resolve that is difficult to conceive of today. An officer unit consists of the man himself and can include up to two other men acting as his immediate attendants.

At the outbreak of war, the QF 2-pdr (QF stands for ‘quick firing’) was the standard anti-tank gun of the British Army. It was an adequate weapon for the time, being slightly more effective in terms of armour penetration then the contemporary German 37mm PaK 36. It was, however, larger and heavier and employed an unusual carriage that required the wheels to be removed before it could fire. Against the early panzers, light vehicles and the poorly armoured Japanese tanks it did well and was popular, meeting success in France, North Africa and the Far East.

The forces of the KPA were vast, incorporating between 150,000 – 200,000 personnel, divided into 10 Infantry divisions, 1 Tank division, and 1 Air Force division. Although North Korean conscription was in effect before the outbreak of war, many young men were encouraged or pressed into service by their own families for the promise of financial reward.

At the outbreak of the Korea war in 1950, the KPA were better prepared in every way for the coming conflict. Not only were they better trained and more favourably equipped, but earlier guerilla warfare in South Korea had also left ROKA forces little time to re-establish a strong military presence. As such, the initial attacks on June 25, 1950, were highly effective.

A Chinese infantry squad consists of 10 men led by a Corporal. Submachine guns were uncommon, but some units were issued with Soviet PPSh-41s. The Czechoslovakian designed and locally made Zb vz. 26 served as the squad's light machine gun. The remaining riflemen carried the Hanyang 88 rifle.

A large portion of the Chinese PVA was made up of conscript peasant soldiers and soldiers captured during the Civil War. Some soldiers had actually surrendered during the Civil War and were forcibly conscripted. Loyalty and capability remained in question for these conscript squads. Some soldiers had very little military training and were armed with rifles and shoulder satchels full of grenades. These units proved to be unpredictable in battle, some fought with distinction, while others needed more encouragement from a political officer.

The Centurion tank began as a Cruiser type in 1943 but the design of the sloped armour elevated it to an infantry style tank. Further developments in technology, upgraded powerplant, upgraded main gun, added stabilizer all increased the performance of the tank until the MK III quickly became the main battle tank of the United Kingdom. The Centurion outclassed most other Allied armour of the Korean War in terms of firepower. It was far superior to the Korean/Chinese Soviet-made T34/85s.

Although the British still used the Projector Infantry Anti-Tank (PIAT), it became more common for them to upgrade to the American-made super Bazooka. The previous version of this weapon (2.36") had proved insufficient to penetrate the armour of the Soviet-made T-34/85 tanks. Enter the M20 'Super Bazooka', capable of penetrating roughly 11" of armour at a distance of 900 yards. More than capable of dealing with anything the North Koreans or Chinese could muster.

The 57mm M1 anti-tank gun was a close copy of the British QF 6pdr which was itself also used by some American units. The M1 originally fired an armoured-piercing shell weighing 2.272kg but this soon proved to be insufficient to penetrate the armour of the new Panther and Tiger tanks. In 1944 an APDS (armoured piercing dispensing sabot) shell was developed making this the first gun to have a discarding sabot shot as its service round. HE shells were only available from 1944 onwards. The 57mm anti-tank gun used by US airborne forces has a special carriage that allowed them to be towed as if they were light anti-tank guns.

In 1940 the American Army asked for a gun that could effectively stop any tank. The design foresaw a 76.2mm AA barrel while the gun carriage would be that used on the 105mm howitzer. The result did not live up to expectations and the design was shelved. After the invasion of Europe the need for a higher calibre gun forced the army to dust-off the design and around 3,000 were made and issued to Tank Destroyer units. From 1945 they were gradually phased out entirely in favour of mobile Tank Destroyers such as the M10.

Our latest Warlord Range is perfect for bringing the battles into the winter of 1944-45. Packed with character that really shows how unprepared for the truly bitter winter, which hit Europe that year, the US forces really were.

Despite facing the double invasion of their homeland in 1939 by both Germany and the Soviet Union, the vastly outnumbered Polish military fought with bravery and tenacity. The Polish army in 1939 was large, well-officered and relatively well-equipped. It fought hard, but was entirely outmanoeuvred by fast-moving German armoured thrusts supported by all arms in a new dynamic style of war that a largely foot-slogging Polish army could not match. When the Soviets joined the fight and also invaded Poland, bisecting the country, it was too much for an already over-extended army short of armour and air support to hold out against – the end was inevitable.

Due to the relatively short amount of time at the front, and particularly because of the constant influx of replacements, regular US infantry units never got quite as ‘seasoned’ as those of some other countries that lacked the American manpower, training and organisation.

But once they did, they became the iconic imagery for the allies - the 'soldier to be'. Determined and proud, they fought on in any situation, often to the last bullet.

Tough as nails, you can give these vets any task and they'll be able to do it. They are not invincible so make sure they are supported, or advancing behind some form of cover. Better yet, give them some transport and get them to the objective asap!

The Browning M2HB .50-cal. was undoubtedly one of the best HMGs of World War II. It is still used today. It was renowned for its penetration capacity, as its heavy bullets could go right through the armour of half-tracks, armoured cars and even some light tanks. Mounted on a 20kg tripod, its weight made it very stable allowing accurate bursts of fire.

Small-calibre field artillery was not widely used in the American Army except by the Paratroopers and the Marines. A few other special forces preferred the small-calibre pack howitzer (75mm) because it could be moved easily. It could also be transported or dropped by parachute after breaking it down into its component parts. Airborne units so equipped won battle honors at Bastogne, Normandy, and Arnhem.

An artillery observer unit consists of an artillery officer model and can include a second model as assistant radio operator. Artillery officers were often attached as liaison at company level to coordinate the fire of artillery batteries behind the front line. This was done in various ways, ranging from the use of radio or field telephones to runners.

Don’t forget that once per game, when the forward artillery, observer unit receives a fire order (not from Ambush), the observer can contact his forward battery, calling in either an artillery barrage or a smoke barrage.

The 105 mm M2A1 (M101A1) howitzer was the standard light field howitzer for the United States in World War II. These guns were grouped into 4-gun batteries. Their role was to lay down a barrage to prepare for an advance, or to break the impetus of enemy infantry attacks.

Artillery of this kind could even slow attacks by armoured vehicles. With a range of 11,000 metres and a shell that weighed nearly 15kg, the 105mm gun was a formidable weapon indeed.

As Hitler's military machine unleashed their devastating assault on Poland in 1939, the SS were still in the process of transitioning from political to military organisation, becoming the Waffen-SS (armed SS) and the military wing of the Nazi party.

Well-supplied and well-led the fanatical Waffen-SS were an increasingly formidable fighting force. These controversial but elite troops were dogged by accusations of atrocities, particularly in Poland and on the Eastern Front during Operation Barbarossa.

The Smith Gun actually looked like a real field artillery engine. It was developed by the chief engineer of the Trianco heating appliance company under his own initiative: the cynical called it the ‘Triang gun’ after the toy company.

It was a 3-inch, smooth bore howitzer with solid metal wheels that – with its limber – was light enough to be towed behind a civilian car. The gun was simply upended on one of the wheels for firing.

It had an effective range of about 500 yards and could discharge HE and AT rounds. It was strangely popular, despite an appalling safety record. The exact number manufactured is uncertain but seems to have been 3,000–4,000.

The last black powder weapon ever issued to the British Army, the Northover Projector was a 1940 improvised antitank weapon specifically designed for the Home Guard. It was the brainchild of Major RH Northover, a Home Guard officer.

Another smooth bore weapon, the projector fired the No. 76 Special Incendiary Grenade (as well as fragmentation grenades) with an effective range of about 150 yards. The Projector was usually fixed to a tripod but examples were mounted on vehicles including motorcycle side cars.

Lieutenant Colonel Stewart Blacker was a retired Indian Army officer who dabbled in weapon research, especially in attempts to create an anti-tank weapon based around the spigot mortar concept: a barrel-less device that uses a steel rod – the spigot – to ignite a charge propelling a bomb into the air.

The War Office was unresponsive to Blacker’s approaches until a demonstration of the weapon ignited Winston Churchill’s ‘boy’s own’ love of the dramatic. The mortar was mounted on a concrete pedestal or substantial cruciform platform so was immobile.

The standard issue German anti-tank gun in 1939, it equipped the Panzerjäger battalions, Pak is short for Panzerwehrkanone - anti-tank gun, and 36 indicates the year the weapon was designed). It was arguably the best anti-tank gun in the world at the onset of war, but was quickly outclassed by heavier armour on enemy tanks. Still 15,000 were produced for Germany and its allies and it was still in service in 1945.

The Pak 36 is the anti-tank gun the Germans always defaulted to because of it's reliability and prowess. It was also relatively easy to handle and quite mobile, only needing two men to bring it into action.

The BUF had no access to military artillery of any sort so were required to make improvised rocket-mortars from blasting materials stolen from quarries and so forth.

A handful of Boys anti-tank rifles with limited amounts of ammunition were seized in a raid on a Territorial Army magazine. These rare and tricky weapons would be given to ex-military veterans with some training wherever possible.

Some Blackshirt volunteers might have military experience, but most would be impressionable and not very bright young men or street thugs. They are therefore classed as Inexperienced.

The officer class of the I squad were known as group leaders, a 'group', being roughly similar to a platoon or company of the British Army. They were divided into senior and junior leaders, roughly equivalent to captain/major and second/first lieutenant.

They tended to consist of men who had been NCOs in the regular army or young sprigs from the upper-middle and upper classes, the BUF being relatively free of class distinctions as it was a revolutionary movement.
